Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Photospecial
Mauro Coscia and Francesco Lucarelli, the joint authors of this book, are also the men who run the Italian CSNY fanzine Wooden Nickel.
The quality of that mag’s photos isn’t always wonderful, but there can’t be no possible complaints about the contents of this book,
which includes almost 150 CSNY-related photos, all printed on art paper, and mostly never seen before.
Besides concert and tour shots taken by the authors and their friends, there are many pictures from the copious collection of
West Coast photographer extraordinaire, Henry Diltz, plus photos contributed by Crazy Horse’s Billy Talbot.
My favourites were the pictures taken during the recording sessions of “The Byrds” reunion album, featuring Crosby and McGuinn
harmonising while a rough mix plays in the background. The rest include rare magazine covers featuring one or more of CSNY,
plus a host of candid and unfamiliar material from 1965 to the present day.
Published in a limited edition of 1,000 copies,
it’s bound to become a collector’s item. CSNY fans should invest immediately!

Ottimamente stampato in 1.000 esemplari su carta patinata e distribuito in proprio dagli autori (entrambi responsabili della fanzine Wooden Nickel), questo volume fotografico riesce
a dire per immagini ciò che altrimenti, con l'ausilio della parola scritta, richiederebbe il triplo delle pagine.
La storia è di quelle complesse e di lunga durata: dai Manassas ai giorni d'oggi, passando attraverso i Buffalo Springfield, i Crazy Horse, i Byrds, le tante amicizie, le quattro carriere soliste e le tante ramificazioni artistiche. Foto di buonissima qualità (Henry Diltz e David Tulsky su tutti, poi Joel Bernstein, Lynn Goldsmith, Neal Preston, Linda McCartney e altri obiettivi illustri, compreso qualche italiano), impaginazione elegante e sobria, note esaurienti per ogni scatto, comprensibili slanci di fanatismo (vari related artists - fra i quali Nils Lofgren, Joe Vitale, Mike Finnigan, Tom Petty, Joni Mitchell, Roger McGuinn e Jackson Browne – colti nell'intento di leggere la suddetta fanzine grazie alla quale il prezioso volume vede la luce) e copertine storiche dedicate ai quattro (un Rolling Stone del '74, Crawdaddy, Dark Slar, Musician, Bam e altre europee
ed italiane) costituiscono una portata davvero succulenta per gli amanti delle quattro mitiche figure
della intramontabile west-coast.
Photo Special, con le sue dimensioni da rivista (la superficie di copertina è di poco più ampia di quella di ''Velvet") e con la sua realizzazione più che professionale, meriterebbe un posto nella bibliografia ufficiale degli artisti ai quali rende omaggio.
